Towards AI-Supported Project-Based Learning

Empowering teachers and engaging students with GenAI.

We've always believed that education should go beyond memorizing facts or getting ready for the next exam. It should spark curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

But let's be clear: PBL isn't just about "doing a project". I'ts about learning through the project. The project is the main course, not the dessert at the end. It frames the curriculum. It challenges students to tackle real-world problems. It requires them to think critically, work together, communicate, and reflect.

When done right, PBL is one of the most powerful ways to prepare students for the future. But here’s the catch: PBL often means a lot of work for teachers. Designing meaningful projects, adapting them to each class, managing teamwork, and giving feedback… It’s rewarding, but also exhausting.

So we asked ourselves:

How can the new wave of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools help us to improve PBL while making it feasible for teachers to facilitate?

Not to replace teachers—but to support them. To reduce repetitive tasks. To spark ideas. To help personalize the learning experience.

That’s where Generative AI (GenAI) comes in.
And that’s precisely what this new Erasmus+ project is all about.

We’re proud to collaborate with three forward-thinking partners:
  • OBS Berenbostel (Germany) A school pioneering project-based learning through their FREI DAY and THEO models, where students engage in self-organized learning on global challenges.
  • ‘t Vier (Belgium) A secondary school rooted in Freinet pedagogy, blending hands-on, cooperative learning with deep engagement in real-world problems—primarily through interdisciplinary STEM projects.
  • Asociación Aprendizaje Activo (España) A non-profit organisation promoting evidence-based innovation in education, with deep expertise in AI, self-directed learning, and pedagogical research.

Together, we bring practical classroom experience, technological insight, and academic rigor to the table.

This project was born from a shared need:

  • Los Teachers want to deliver high-quality PBL without burning out.
  • Los Students deserve personalised, relevant, and creative learning experiences.
  • Los Schools are navigating the digital transition and exploring AI’s affordances for education through practical use cases. Through this collaboration, we want to do it thoughtfully, ethically, and sustainably.

The core assumption we will investigate in this project is that GenAI can take the pressure off teachers and unlock more time for real human interaction—coaching, feedback, and creativity.
At the same time, we want to empower students to co-create, explore, and take ownership of their learning.

We’ve set four clear goals for this project:

  1. Create a GenAI Starters Kit
    A practical guide for teachers with step-by-step ideas and real classroom use cases on how to use GenAI to support project design, assessment, and classroom management.
  2. Train Teachers through a Bootcamp
    Two rounds of hands-on blended (in-person and online) training for teachers across Europe, with real classroom applications and expert support.
  3. Build a Peer-Learning Network
    Student-teacher exchanges to Germany and Belgium are scheduled, resulting in a teacher ambassador network to foster collaboration and share success stories across borders.
  4. Share and Grow
    All project materials—guides, templates, training videos—will be freely shared via eTwinning and the Erasmus+ Project Results Platform, so schools everywhere can benefit.

Here’s how they break down:

  • Research & GenAI Starters Kit
    We’ll explore what works in PBL and where GenAI can make a difference—then build a starter kit for teachers.
  • Online Bootcamps
    The newly developed expertise will be shared with teachers through interactive training ‘bootcamps’ with follow-up tasks that teachers can use immediately in their classrooms, promoting learning by doing.
  • Student-Teacher Exchanges
    Real-life visits between schools, where students and teachers share, reflect, and build friendships across borders.
  • Dissemination
    We’ll document everything—guides, videos, blog posts—so others can join the movement.

What impact do we expect?

  • Teachers will feel empowered, supported, inspired, and better prepared. They’ll learn how to use GenAI effectively, ethically and practically to reduce workload and boost creativity.
  • Students will benefit from richer projects, more ownership, and a deeper sense of connection to the world around them.
  • Schools will move forward in digital innovation—not just with tools, but with purpose and pedagogy.
  • Europe’s education system gets a tested, scalable model for integrating GenAI in ways that are human-centered, teacher-driven, and rooted in learning.
