Transforming Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Europe through self-assessment.
Introducing our new Erasmus+ project!
Imagine classrooms where autonomy, the reflection and the ability to self-regulate learning become the norm.
We seek transforming Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Europe by improving teachers' skills in implementing self-assessment strategies.

Our main objective
Our ultimate goal is for students to develop self-regulation and lifelong learning skills, preparing them for an ever-changing professional world.
How?
Through this project, we will bring into the classrooms a methodology based on the latest scientific evidence. This initiative was created to empower vocational training teachers, by offering practical resources and specific training in self-assessment, so that they can support their students in developing essential skills such as critical thinking, the autonomy and the adaptability.
What are we going to do? Key project actions
- Self-assessment Playbook, a visual and interactive guide with ready-to-use resources.
- Specific training following practical and personalised programmes for VET teachers.
- Pilots in educational centres testing strategies in classrooms in Belgium, Malta and Spain.
- Practical and adaptable materials such as templates, examples and guides ready to be customised according to needs.
- Open publication of all materials in several languages, face-to-face and virtual events, social media campaigns and blogs. All under a free and open licence.

Self-assessment training delivered in Malta and Kortrijk
As part of our Erasmus+ project Self-Assessment Mastery for Lifelong Learning in VET, we have completed the first round of teacher training sessions at the Malta Vocational Centre and at RHIZO Kortrijk. We are pleased to report that both sessions ran smoothly and that the VET teachers who took part left motivated, prepared and, most importantly, satisfied.
How did it go?
The training brought together VET teachers from Belgium and Malta around a practical question: how can we make self-assessment really work in a VET classroom? Rather than adding more assessment theory, the sessions focused on a practical tool that will help their learners review their own work, spot mistakes earlier and rely less on the teacher to know whether they are on the right track. Teachers did not just hear about self-assessment: they experienced it, tried it out and left with a mini-activity ready to use with their own learners.
Participants' feedback was positive and constructive. We take that feedback very seriously: teachers' input is being used to refine the first version of our Self-Assessment Guide and to improve the training itself for future sessions. That iterative cycle —train, listen, improve— is exactly what the project set out to achieve.
What we used (and what you can download)
We believe good resources should be shared freely, so the materials used during the training are available to any VET teacher who wants to put them into practice in their own classroom:
- Training session guide: the full facilitator script, based on the project handbook, covering what self-assessment is (and is not), why it matters in VET and how to motivate learners to use it.
- Activity descriptions: an explanation of the activities used during the training.
- ANNEX to Activity 1 — «Sort the situations»: a quick mini-game to distinguish genuine self-assessment from simple self-grading or teacher correction.
- ANNEX to Activity 2 — «Stop and check»: a comparison of how learners assess the same piece of work with and without clear criteria.
- Activity 3 — Building a useful rubric: identifying the features of a strong rubric and improving a weak one.
- ANNEX to Activity 4 — Design your own micro-activity: a template so that teachers leave with a self-assessment routine ready to try out: one task, three criteria, a self-check moment and a final improvement question.
The key message behind all of this is that, in VET, self-assessment works best when it is short, clear, linked to real tasks and not weighed down by grades.
