Effective Use of Flashcards as an Active Recall Strategy
We present to you our new Erasmus+ project!
Have you heard about retrieval practice?
Retrieval practice is one of the most effective learning strategies, supported by scientific evidence, which focuses on actively retrieving knowledge from memory and creating deeper, strengthened, and connected learning. With this project, we aim to increase and improve the use of retrieval practice through flashcards (commonly known as flashcards) as a learning tool.
Active Learning Association is proud to lead the FLASH-RET project, which also includes two European schools: Gheorghe Asachi Botosani Technical High School from Romania, and Lodz International Innovative Education Primary School from Poland.

Our main objective
Improve learning outcomes and promote active learning training both educators and students in the effective use of flashcards for retrieval practice.
How?
Using retrieval practice and the power of flashcards, this project aims to bring evidence-based teaching and learning strategies to classrooms across Europe.
Our plan focuses on practicality and effectiveness:
- Creation of a comprehensive guide with videos and guidelines for real-world application, based on the latest scientific evidence.
- Practical training for teachers. Our goal is for flashcards to become part of everyday classroom practice.
- Implementation of pilot activities.
- Development of practical resources such as high-quality examples and templates for various subjects.
- Dissemination: Events, publications, newsletters, social media, etc.
If you are interested in the progress of our project, we invite you to follow the link below and subscribe to our biannual newsletter. By subscribing, you will receive updated information about the project, have the opportunity to participate in training courses, and be among the first to enjoy the results. We look forward to welcoming you to our community and collaborating together to improve education for all. We appreciate your attention and interest in FLASH-RET.

The training sessions and pilot projects of the FLASH-RET project, conducted at our partner schools, are now behind us!
These sessions aimed to promote active learning by integrating evidence-based teaching strategies into the classroom. Teachers learned to use technologies such as Quizlet to create interactive flashcards that address various dimensions of knowledge, and to incorporate techniques like spaced and interleaved repetition to enhance student knowledge retention. The training also highlighted methods for using flashcards at home and helping students develop self-regulated learning skills.
We take this opportunity to share with you the materials used in the two training sessions, in case you would like to use them in your educational institutions:
- Presentation of the first training session in Spanish
- Presentation of the second training session in Spanish
- Template to create your own physical flashcards
- Presentation of the first training session in English
- Presentation of the second training session in English
Between each training session, attendees were encouraged to test what they had learned and to begin using flashcards in their classes with all students. The results of the pilot tests have been positive, and all teachers have observed an increase in student motivation and engagement. The project continues to gather feedback on students and other outcomes to support the effective use of flashcards in teaching.

Join us for the FLASH-RET online event on October 17th at 17:00 (CET Time)!
We are excited to invite families, students, teachers, and all educational stakeholders to the official event of the Erasmus+ project "Effective Use of Flashcards for Retrieval Practice" (FLASH-RET).This online event will take place according to the Erasmus Days on October 17th at 17:00 (CET time), and we encourage everyone to participate and learn more about this innovative initiative.
During the event, we will:
- Present the FLASH-RET project on a European scale.
- Introduce the participating organizations and the team behind the project.
- Share the lessons learned and the results achieved so far.
This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in evidence-based learning strategies, such as retrieval practice using flashcards, to get involved and connect with like-minded professionals.
You can join the event using the following link: Event Link
Alternatively, you can register beforehand and receive a personal invitation to the event via email by filling out this form: Event Registration Form.

Our handbook on using flashcards in the classroom is now available!
We are delighted to announce the official publication of the handbook on using flashcards in the classroom, developed within the FLASH-RETproject. This handbook is a comprehensive theoretical and practical guide that gives teachers the most effective, evidence-based tools for integrating flashcards into the classroom to increase participation, knowledge retention and student learning.
The handbook covers a wide range of topics: an introduction to how memory works in learning, retrieval practice with flashcards, their benefits, how to create effective exercises with flashcards and their adaptation to different age groups and subjects, and more. Whether you are an experienced teacher or new to this technique, the handbook offers valuable knowledge and practical tips to help you improve your classroom skills.
The handbook is available in all the partners' languages (English, Spanish, Polish and Romanian), making it accessible to teachers from different regions. By adapting these resources to different languages, the FLASH-RET project aims to help teachers offer a more personalised and effective learning experience.
You can download the handbook in any of the following versions:
We hope you enjoy it!

Our project is coming to an end!
How time flies! After 16 months of work, learning and collaboration, we are pleased to share the results of the FLASH-RET project. This initiative Erasmus+ brought together Active Learning Association (Spain), the Gheorghe Asachi Technical College (Romania) and the International School of Lodz (Poland) to explore and implement the effective use of flashcards as a retrieval practice strategy.
Retrieval practice is an evidence-based learning strategy that involves actively recalling information. This approach improves knowledge retention, critical thinking and academic performance. With FLASH-RET, we set out to bring this strategy into classrooms across Europe.
The FLASH-RET Journey
The project began with the development of a comprehensive handbook that combines theory and practice. This resource includes step-by-step guides, inclusion strategies and concrete examples so that teachers can use flashcards effectively. Thanks to input from teachers and experts, the handbook responds to a wide range of educational needs. You can download it HERE.
Next, we organised teacher training sessions in Romania and Poland. These sessions gave teachers at these schools practical tools for bringing flashcards into their lessons. The teachers also took part in evaluating the first version of the handbook, making sure it matched the real needs of the classroom. You can find the training materials by following THIS LINK.
The third phase focused on pilot projects with teachers, in which teachers applied retrieval practice techniques using flashcards. This hands-on experience allowed us to refine the strategies based on feedback from teachers and students. We also produced two inspiring videos showcasing success stories in the use of these techniques. You can watch them HERE. All the teachers and students involved in these experiences were delighted after discovering all the ways they could use flashcards to improve learning.
Finally, over the last few months we have developed high-quality materials, including editable templates and sets of flashcards ready to use. We were really looking forward to finally presenting these resources, which are designed for different ages, subjects and students with different needs, ensuring inclusiveness and versatility. Download them THIS LINK.
For greater accessibility, all resources are subtitled or available in English, Spanish, Polish and Romanian.
The Power of European Collaboration
We would like to give special mention to one of the most rewarding aspects of FLASH-RET: the collaboration between partners. Sharing knowledge and adapting strategies across different countries has not only enriched the project's resources and broadened its impact, but has also greatly enriched everyone who worked on it. This transnational work reflects the spirit of Erasmus+ and highlights the importance of joining forces to improve education.
We hope these resources inspire teachers and students to embrace the use of flashcards and retrieval practice. We are deeply grateful to Erasmus+ for funding this initiative and to everyone involved for their enthusiasm, expertise and commitment. Together, we have taken a significant step towards more effective learning experiences for all.
