FUTURE DESIGNERS

What if children didn't just use artificial intelligence, but learned to design with it?

Generative artificial intelligence is already part of our students' lives. The question is not whether they will use it, but how. We want children aged 9 to 12 to work with it through design thinking and project-based learning, without AI ever becoming a shortcut that thinks for them.

FUTURE DESIGNERS aims to develop their creative agency: the power to make and the authority to decide. That is why ethics (bias, privacy, fairness and ownership) is present at every step of a very simple classroom routine, Me → AI → Me: first I think, then I ask the AI, I check carefully, I make the choice and I reflect.

The project is coordinated by Stichting Designathon Works (Netherlands), in collaboration with Active Learning Association (Spain), Change Of Course (Belgium), Projeto Scholé (Portugal), Brede school Noorderbreedte (Netherlands) and Vrije Basisschool O.L.V. van Vlaanderen (Belgium).

Our goal

To train primary school teachers so that their pupils aged 9 to 12 can co-design with generative AI responsibly, developing creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking and digital competence.

Our activities

  • GenAI Starter Kit, a ready-to-use classroom resource organised around the phases of design (understand, research, ideate, prototype, test and reflect) and adapted to schools with different levels of access to technology, even screen-free.
  • GenAI Design Education Bootcamp for primary school teachers, with four practical modules (idea generation, research synthesis, prototyping, and inclusive and responsible use of AI) and student pilots in the participating schools.
  • Teacher Ambassador Network and best-practice exchanges between schools in the Netherlands, Belgium and Portugal, with an eTwinning community and success stories from teachers and students.
  • Video tutorials so that any teacher can learn at their own pace and bring these strategies into their classroom.
  • Advocacy Toolkit with a manifesto and recommendations for school leaders and education policymakers. All materials will be published openly in English, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese.
